My Collaboration on Massive Attack's "Eutopia"

In June 2020, I collaborated with Massive Attack on their groundbreaking audio-visual EP, Eutopia, which was created during the COVID-19 lockdown. This project tackles critical global issues—namely the climate crisis, tax havens, and universal basic income—through a unique blend of music, spoken word, and AI-generated visuals. The EP features insightful commentary from three prominent academics:

  • Christiana Figueres, who addresses the climate crisis
  • Guy Standing, who discusses universal basic income
  • Gabriel Zucman, who covers tax havens

These contributions, paired with musical collaborations from artists like Algiers, Young Fathers, and Saul Williams, give the project its profound depth.

My role in Eutopia focused on designing the generative visuals for the music videos. Using artificial intelligence, I crafted imagery that brought the EP’s themes to life. For example, in one video, I created shifting, distorted skulls—eerie visuals that reflect the urgency of the climate crisis and the fragility of our planet. Working closely with Robert Del Naja (3D) and filmmaker Mark Donne, I ensured the visuals complemented the EP’s soundscapes, enhancing its overall impact.

This project built on my previous work with Massive Attack, including the Mezzanine XXI show, where I also experimented with AI-driven art. Eutopia offered a unique opportunity to merge AI artistry with activism, amplifying critical messages through an innovative multimedia platform. It was an inspiring experience to contribute to a work that both pushes creative boundaries and confronts the defining challenges of our time.
