Page Turn Lecture Files

The source code of my page turn component that I showed in my flashconference session "Pages to turn on" is now available for download here. I've also added the presentation slides in case you want to have a look at the related links again.

Does anybody know how to make animations or movies only start playing when the page is openened (and possibly let them stop when the next page is openened). Thanks

Posted by: Martijn on May 13, 2004 11:25 AM

Id say this is best solved by creating an event or using a callback. This is not included in the current version but it makes sense. So as soon as the turning phase has ended "onPageReady" is called. inside each page you can then provide a method with this name that might start an animation or play a sound or do whatever you want.

Sounds really good, and I did give it ago but I'm afraid I'm more a designer than a programmer. So if u get the chance to explain this a bit more precice it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks once again.

It is really cool, many thanks Mario

Posted by: Laco on May 19, 2004 06:27 PM

Awesome! Just wondering if it's possible to add buttons to each page, giving users options to skip pages.

Posted by: DeMon on May 19, 2004 10:11 PM

Hey Mario love your pageturn, thanks a lot for the opportunity to use your code :-)
I have one question though - I can't seem to get the loader component to work within the same file as the pageturn file. Do you have any workarounds to my problem. What I would like to do, is to have jpg's loaded into each new page. So that the user won’t experience that much of a load time.

Thanks again its really great

PS. if you wan't you can check out what I am working on here

Posted by: asbjoern on June 8, 2004 12:04 AM

@asbjoern: maybe there's a problem with the initialization order of the components? What happens exactly when you are using the loader component? Without seeing the fla file it's difficult to say how this could be corrected.

hi there,
an amazing script for sure, but is it possible to change the h/w of the pages ? (like something 400*700) I try somethings but nothing work ...
Sure I'm a lame ;)

Thx a lot for this application

Posted by: Telemak on June 15, 2004 02:02 AM

400*700 shouldn't be a problem. Just change the settings in the component panel and exchange the pages of the example with your pages.

would anyone plz tell me any script or prog or nething which can allow me to present my short story in a flip-book on my site? i dunno how to program in flash. so i need sth easy.

Posted by: omer on July 5, 2004 10:40 AM

Hi Mario! I've checked out about every pageflip engine there is around there (starting with the Macc's V2, then his dynamic, and then finally this one).
First spent alot of time with Maccs static one trying to make it dynamic ... worked but there was a small flicker in it. Then found his dynamic version ... too bad it loads everything 8 times .... and then found this version.
Altered it a bit so that it loads up everything dynamically (still haven't made a preloader for it though) and that you can zoom in on the pages (basically only loading a new (larger) jpg on top of it).

Now I've been playing a bit to make autoflip work for your script but I really haven't found any success. I can flip the page automatically but it doesn't go in a small curve from left to right (or from right to left, depending on which page I'm flipping.)

The red marked area at my site is where you can click to flip the page manually (onStartDrag();)
The green marked area is to autoflip
All the rest is to view a big pic of it.

For the autoflip I've made these functions ( file):
o.autoFlipToLeft = function() {
o.autoFlipToRight = function() {
o.autoFlip = function(direction) {
this.dragSpeed = .05;

this.mousePosition = new point2d(Number(direction)*246, 355);
this.pickupPosition = new point2d(Number(direction)*246, 355);
this.dragTarget = new point2d(Number(direction)*246,355);

if (this.activePage == null) {

this.landingPosition = new point2d(Number(direction)*(-246),355);
this.dragTarget = new point2d(this.pickupPosition);

this.pageFlipped = true;

Note: 246 is the width of my pages and 355 the height.

But when playing with the landingPosition, startPosition and startDrag XY values it tends to get messed up ... whenever I change one it somewhere gets stuck (thus does not complete the flip itself) or simply won't work...

Any idea?

Posted by: Bramus! on July 8, 2004 03:07 PM

Oh yeah, above that I've noticed a small flicker with my version when changeing flipping direction (and when starting).

could anyone plz tell me how to make a the page flip automatically when a link is clicked

Posted by: naz on October 16, 2004 04:54 PM

Hey, GREAT scripting, by far the best I've seen. But, I can´t see how these pages are "dynamic". How do you load external .swf content into each page? Does anyone know? It seems to me that the "export for actionscript" in linkage will disable this feature? I´ve managed to load an external swf into one of the pages, but then it just disappears? Please help!!!

Posted by: wez on October 19, 2004 11:21 AM

Yes, you're right, to load the pages dynamic you will have to add your own routine. And that's not an easy task. Currently I haven't got the time to look further into it, but of course it would be a challenge.

Posted by: Mario Klingemann on October 19, 2004 11:29 AM

I love your page-turn flash script. I was wondering if the website "template" shown at is incorporating your page-turn script? I really like what they've done, but I would rather use your script than buy theirs.

Keep up the awsome work!!!

I was woundering. How can you use the media display component with the page turn script. Everytime i insert the media display component nothing plays

Posted by: John on November 5, 2004 07:44 PM

I am also looking for a way to dynamically load JPG images into a page-turning SWF like this. I have tried unsucessfully to get this to work thus far outside of a simple project that does NOT involve the page turn effect. Any tips or sample code would be GREATLY appreciated.

Posted by: Loren Scott on November 10, 2004 10:08 PM

is it possible to put the page turning on a timer of some kind? I've tried a couple of different approaches but I can only get it to turn the first page and then it quits.

Posted by: Tom Myer on December 13, 2004 05:56 AM

that great! can i do if i want to turn the page not dragging?
i want to turn the page just whit a click.

Is this an MX2004 file? Any chance of getting it in plain old MX? Thanks . . .

Has anyone here made a dynamic version available for download?

Posted by: David Terranova on February 8, 2005 05:55 PM

I am using the page flip and its fantastic. One thing thats driving me crazy is that I have text feilds in it and its importing dynamic xml text BUT every time I try to turn a page in the book the text gets all weird, it jumps and is blurry not crisp...whats going on? can someone help? when I look at this site

his text is perfect

Posted by: Leia on February 23, 2005 07:15 PM

Leia, as you seem to be using the page flip by iparigrafika unfortunately I cannot help you.

The problem is probably that you are using non-embedded html text which cannot be rotated and its masking capabilities are also limited.

Posted by: Mario Klingemann on February 23, 2005 07:28 PM

Nice stuff this is!

Have a prob which is a little out of my league and I can only get this to half work.

I have almost 200 pages of content using this + need to build a nav which allows access to any page. The code I have takes me to the page BUT when I page backwards after that it gets all messed up.

Code on btn is: ( simple I know, n00b actionscripter I am! )

_root.TestBook.currentPage = 4;

Any suggestions? please help :)

Hey there,

I just downloaded the sourcecode for the Pageturner, but it seems like I can't identify the application to use it with.

The file in the Archive is simply called "pageflip_v211" but that doesn't help me... When looking at it with notepad, I saw a whole bunch of references. Is the page turner exclusive for Apple's, or is there something for Windows as well?

Posted by: Telvis on March 1, 2005 11:02 PM

@Telvis: Wrong adress? You are probably using iparigrafika's pageturner and not mine (the one that you can download from the link above). Sorry, but I cannot help you with that problem. You will have to ask Macc directly.

Hi! This flipbook it's the best one i ever seen. I want to know if i can put a magnifier or a zoom in each pages. Any suggestions? please help :)

Posted by: Gab on March 5, 2005 07:12 AM

i'm using pageturn2004 how do i get the page size to change..right now my image is smaller and when i preview i'm seeing extra width..

Posted by: wilcina on March 7, 2005 01:50 AM

@wilcina: just check out the flipBook component parameters tab. There are two options: when the parameter "Auto Size" is "false" then the two values "Page Width"/"Page Height" are used. If "Auto Size" is "true" then the book is set to the size of the first page (frame 1) in your "pages" symbol.

Posted by: Mario Klingemann on March 7, 2005 11:17 AM

hey mario thxs a million for it to work thxs...
another question on since the last page is not readable, how do i zoom in, insert a bigger page to make it readable to viewers?

Posted by: Wilcina on March 10, 2005 06:18 PM

I think the easiest way to zoom in would be to set the _xscale and _yscale (and adjust_x and _y accordingly) of the component itself.

Something like this:

Whilst the zoom is active you should disable the page turn though (hmmm - did I add an option for this? Not sure...)

Posted by: Mario Klingemann on March 10, 2005 06:23 PM

mario do you have instant messenger?.. i don't know where to go to see the code in flash... but if i set the _yscale =200 how does it know to do that?

Posted by: Wilcina on March 10, 2005 06:31 PM

Sorry, but right now I'm too involved in other stuff that I haven't got the time to talk this through on IM.

What I think you need is a little controller next to the book which allows to zoom in, maybe by means ofa slider. But when it's zoomed it will not fit into your layout, so a scrollpane might come in handy.

I guess that's all I can tell you right now.

Posted by: Mario Klingemann on March 10, 2005 06:51 PM

mario, could you help me with the zoom script?

Posted by: Wilcina on March 10, 2005 08:19 PM

Sorry - I accidently deleted you last comment because I thought it was spam.

But I did not find the zoom you mention.

Posted by: Mario Klingemann on March 10, 2005 10:59 PM click on shop by catalog then choose the first catalog (the white one) look on the left they give you an option to hit the zoom...
could i send you my file to help me with the zoom? please.

Posted by: Wilcina on March 10, 2005 11:23 PM

Okay now I see it. Well that's a way to do it. But they added some smart loading routines, too.

You can mail me the FLA, but I cannot promise that I will be able to do anything with it - too busy right now.

Posted by: narasimham on December 14, 2005 12:29 PM

Hi there! Inspired by Macs flipbook I adapted steves version of the flipbook( So far everthing work out great. I just have one problem. I want to Insert a page that dynamically loads text from an external .txt file. Doing this is simple. The "dynamic text.swf" file works fine on its own, but I have trouble inserting it into the flip book.Running the flipbook, when i get to the page with the dynamic text I don't see anything!??when I hover over the area where the text should be displayed, the mouse cursor changes to the "text" cursor, so there is something but it's invisible! Hope you guys here can help!
